A well-known master mariner, Captain E. J. Keatley, master of the Northern Steamship Company’s auxiliary motor vessel Hauturu. has retired, after 48 years’ service at sea. Captain Keatley went to sea at. the age of 14, nnd byjhe time he was 25 had obtained his master’s ticket. He has spent 40 years with the company, commanding vessels under its flag for 25 years. For 21 years he has been trading chiefly between Onehunga, New Plymouth. Wanganui and Pieton. with frequent trips to Westjwrt and Greymouth. Captain Keatley is also a keen horticulturist, nnd the garden at his home at Mount Albert. Auckland, is visited by hundreds of garden-lovers every year.
