TEACHERS’ HOUSES
Examples of Neglect WANGANUI BOARD'S AREA Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, March 30. Following statements made elsewhere regarding the state of school residences, inquiries were made to-day by “The Dominion” as to the position in the 5\ angauui Education Board’s district, which includes Manawatu. it was ascertained that whi' * the majority of residences were in good condition there were cases, in co nmoii with other parts of New Zealand, where teachers were expected to live iu conditions which were both unfavourable and undigniiie... There were schoolhouses, also, which were not in the best of order. The school residence at Bulls and the school at Taonui, near Feilding, were the worst examples. The Bulls teachers reIcnce was 60 years old. sir »to three months ago it had had a tin bath. As an example of its general condition, when a window was broken the glazier hesitated to attempt to repair it lest the sash fall to pieces. The position was not entirely the fault of the education board, which had been stinted for finance in the past. There was now a definite move to replace old buildings, it was stated. This was absolutely necessary, as teachers were expected to live in board houses and to state whether or not they were prepared to do so in applying for positions. To refuse to do so prejudiced a teacher’s chance of appointment in such cases.
