JAPAN ALARMED
China and Hainan Island
BRITISH INFLUENCE
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received March 28, 6.30 p.m.) Shanghai. March 27. The Chinese decision to spend £2,000,000 in developing Hainan Island has alarmed Japan owing to its proximity to Hong-Kong. The Japanese newspaper “Shanghai Nippo Sha” declares that Britain has persuaded the Government to make this decision as she hopes to secure military rights on Hainan Island in return for financial assistance. Hainan Island would furnish Britain with a splendid air base between Hong-Kong and Singapore.
