EASTER ATTRACTIONS

Wellington Crowded For Holiday Season Wellington has not been so full of visitors at Easter for many years as in the present holiday season. Accommodation for the travelling public has been in short supply because of Jhe many attractions offering in the city. Among these, and of first importance, was the last day of the M.C.C.-New Zealand cricket match at the Basin Reserve, which attracted a full gate. Although there was a smudge of rain between 11 a.m. and noon on Saturday it did not damp the ardour of those interested. During the morning there was the interprovincial eight-oared rowing race on the Korokoro (Petone) course. Luckily the water for such an event was perfect. Although the sky was overcast and light rain did fall for three-quarters of an hour, the conditions were wonderful, as there, was no glare and no sea to contend with. Wanganui beat Wellington by a short “nose” after one of the best eightoared races seen in New Zealand. Probably the rainfall in the forenoon and the dove-grey sky prevented many people attending the beaches. For all that the temperature was warm and the conditions for beach bathing were perfect. Many Wellington people attended the races at Tauherenikau, the evening hours witnessing a long, long trail of motor-cars on the Rimutaka road.

Another attraction in town was the opening performances of the Monte Carlo Russian ballet, which brilliantly entertained crowded houses at the Grand Opera House. Full-up business was reported from the picture theatres. On Saturday evening throngs of people visited the wharf to farewell the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, and the members of the New Zealand cricket team. The night was cool and calm, and those who visited the new Arawa prior to her first departure for England from these shores will carry away pleasant recollections of a notable evening. During yesterday the weather con tinned dull, yet calm and fine, the agreably warm conditions tempting many into the open air.
