Theft of Tools From Bicycles 'This class of offence is at present prevalent in the Hutt Valley and is difficult to detect,” said Detective F. X. Robinson, when Joint James Bayliss, farm hand, 39 years, pleaded guilty before Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.AL. in the .Magistrate’s Court, Lower Hutt, on Thursday to a charge of the theft of one bicycle pump, two spanners and one oilcan, valued at 5/-, the property of Donald Crooks. Accused was convicted and admitted to probation for 12 months. Detective Robinson said Crooks had left his bicycle against a fence at the Hutt golf course, and when he returned tools wore missing. Accused was interviewed the following day. and at first was untruthful. Subsequently he admitted the offence.

Emphasising the prevalence of such thefts. Detective Robinson said that quite recently in Petone a stolen bicycle was recovered on the beach, but everything except the bare frame had been 'taken, even the wheels. It was also almost a daily occurrence for complaints to be received by the Lower Hutt police of cases where bicycles were being’interfered with.
