The Waimairi County Council was asked at a recent meeting to pay £l5 compensation for land taken for road improvements in Fendalton. Members of the council quickly made up their minds about the reasonableness of the claim, however, when they were told by the chairman, Cr. G. G. Gardner, that the claim represented a valuation of the land at £12,000 an acre. The area of the land required for improvements to the road was one-fifth of a perch, and it could be seen, he said, that the claim was excessive. “We should rate «)n that valuation,” commented Cr. E. S. Scott.
