LAWN TENNIS

Wellington Easter Tournament RESULTS OF FIRST DAY’S PLAY The Wellington Lawn Tenths Association’s Easter championships and handicaps tournament was commenced yesterday on the association courts at Miramar in fine weather. Although play was optional, more than 100 matches were got off. The standard of play wag not very high. An innovation was the arrangements foe the umpiring of matches, the control of this being placed in tlie hands of tlie recently-formed Wellington Lawn Tennis Umpires' Association. Because of this arrangement the managers of the tournament were saved a lot of time and worry. The umpiring of the matches was a great improvement ou previous tournaments. Miss Joyce Douthett proved too good for Miss C. Wells, of England, who was playing her first tournament match in New Zealand. Miss Wells hit far too much down mid-court, and beyond an occasional volley, and an attempted dropshot, her game was altogether lacking in variety. Miss Douthett, on the other hand, hit harder and much more accurately. and placed to the side-lines, often leaving Miss Wells standing. Miss Wells got to many of Miss Douthett’.s drop-shots, and then had tlie ill-fortune to drive most of them over the baseline. But there was nothing wrong in the actual way Miss Wells played her strokes, her ground strokes and service being hit freely and with strength. She also volleyed well when she could get into position. But she did not make the best use of her strokes. A. H. Richards and Miss N. Fleming played well below the standard expected of players of their calibre in their match against K. Dyer aud Miss J. Douthett. who plaved all over them. Both from the baseline’ and the forecourt Dyer and Miss Douthett were greatly superior. J. IV. Neal and K. Dyer combined well and made very few mistakes in any department to boat Dillon and O Neill without the loss of a game. Many of the handicap matchtte were close, showing good judgment in the handicapping. Following are the results:— Championship Events A GRADE. Men’s Singles. First round: H. Clay beat V.
