COUNT VON LUCKNER

Picturesque Career Few men have had such a picturesque career as Count von Luekner, who is shortly to revisit New Zealand. He went to sea at 13 years of age on a sailing ship; joined the Salvation Army in Australia to fulfil a promise given to his father to become a lieutenant; became a lighthousekeeper’s assistant; travelled through Australia -with Hindoo magicians as a billposter; sailed to. America to meet Buffalo Bill; walked the ties of the railroad and worked his way from San Francisco to New York; and finallyjoined the German Imperial Navy, gaining a lieutenant’s commission from the Kaiser on account of his record for life-saving. He fought at the Battle of Jutland on board the Crown Prinz. _ For a term during the war he was interned at Ripa Island, following his escape in the first instance from Motuihi Island after being captured at Fiji. He was one of Germany’s greatest raider commanders and won an enviable reputation for chivalry and sportsmanship in his escapades.
