WORK FOR THE WEEK

The Flower Garden Overhaul the herbaceous border. Now is the time to plant Illiums. Propagate hydrangeas by means of cuttings. Narcissi, crocuses, hyacinths, tulips, freesias, babianas, tritonias, Spanish, Dutch, and English irises, and other spring bulbs can now be planted. Propagate geraniums. They can be rooted in the open ground. Sow cineraria for transplanting in spring. Prepare soil for planting of shrubs. Plant paeonies and divide old plants. Sow seed of hardy annuals. Lift gladioli as the foliage turns yellow. Clip evergreen hedges. There is still time to plant bearded irises. Sow and plant anemones for winter flowers. Take cuttings of pansies and violas. Green fly is very prevalent just now. Spray at the first sign of this pest. Use Nicotine Sulphate. Gerberas will respond to weekly applications of liquid manure. Sow antirrhinums, aubretia, asters, calendulas, calliopsis, pansies, sweet peas and zinnias. The Vegetable Garden Harvest marrows and pumpkins as soon as they mature. Plots not likely to be used for some time should now be sown down in green crops for digging in. Remove superfluous lateral shoots from tomatoes and shorten the main leaves to enable fruit to ripen. Thin out all seedling crops. Give rhubarb a mulch of decayed manure. Manure and trench vacant plots in readiness for future cropping. Earth up growing cabbage and cauliflower. Potatoes should now be dug, cleaned and stored.
