Cycling on Footpaths at Eastbourne

PREVALENT PRACTICE

A uaugervu.s practice which has become a very real nuisance in Eastbourne is that of cycling on the loot paths. Even the footpaths of the main street are being used without authority as cycle tracks by persons with little or no regard for pedestrian traffic. Willi some cyclists this practice is stated to have become more of a habit than an exception. Complaints have been sent to tlie Eastbourne Borough Council concerning this growing breach, and several instances of persons only narrowly escaping being knocked over have been reported. It is proposed to take steps to bring about an abatement of the nuisance.

Fire Fighters to Confer. Lower Hutt will be the venue of the United Districts Fire Brigades' conference at Easter. The delegates will assemble to-morrow, when there will be a formal gathering at the Fire -Station. An executive meeting will be held at night. The business of the conference will open on Saturday, ami during the morning delegates will be tendered a civic reception. The day will end with a smoke concert. On Sunday morning there will be a church parade, and in the afternoon delegates will be taken for a marine drive. •

Plunkot Street Day. A successful street day, in aid of the Lower Hutt Blanket Society fund*, was held yesterday. The stall was well stocked with produce, jam. cakes, and sweets, which found ready buyers. 1 hose in charge were Mesdames J. M. Andrews, Hoffer, Graham, Foster, Jenkinson, Hoesen, J. Vogel, Flux, Earnshaw, Cooper. Hough. It is the intention of the society to hold a garden parly in Dr. Marchant’s beautiful grounds on the third Saturday in April.

Rode on Running Board. Charged with riding on the running hoard of a motor-car. Robert Pengeliy was lined £1 and costs by Mr. 11. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Petone, yesterday, It was stated by tlie traffic inspector, Mr. G. A. Booth, that defendant, when interviewed, had declared he was uot aware that it was an offence to stand on the running board of a car, which was in motion. The driver of the car had previously been convicted.

Tennis Tourney Postponed. Because of unforeseen circumstances, the Hutt 'alley Lawn Tennis Sub-Asso-ciation has found it necessary to postpone the mixed doubles tournament to have been held during Easter. This means that Hutt Valley players desiring tournament play during the vacation will have to go outside their own district, as no other activities have been planned. Club courts in the district will, however, be open for play until after Easter.

Appointment of District Nurse. General satisfaction is felt among residents of the eastern bays district with tue announcement that the V ellingtou Hospital Board has agreed to tlie appointment of a district nurse. When a meeting was held a few weeks ago to consider the suggestion that there should be a resident nurse in the. area to attend to the nursing requirements, enthusiasm was displayed. It was stated then that there existed a very real need for such a service, and a provisional committee was set up to further arrangements.
