Commander Thoreux, captain of the trans-Atlantic liner Normandie, which is completing her first voyage from New York after two months’ overhaul and the fitting of four-bladed propellers, has sent a wireles smessage that the vessel has completed the passage from Ambrose Light to Bishop Rock in Scilly Isles, off the coast of Cornwall, the official course for the Atlantic Blue Riband of 2978 miles, in 4 days Omin. 23see., averaging 30.99 knots. This is claimed as a record, beating that of the Cunard-White Star liner Queen Mary last year when she covered a shorter course of 2708 miles in 3 days. 23 hours, 57 minutes, averaging 30.63 knots. Au official of the French Line emphasises that the record was made in mid-winter, the Normandie in the last two days driving against strong head winds.
The new propellers are made of very light alloy, each weighing three tons less than the old. <
