GALLOPS AT HAWERA

Lowenberg’ and Friesland Dominion Special Service Hawera, March 23. Gallops on the Hawera tracks this morning took place on the plough, which was fast after the recent fine weather. Lowenberg (L. Monkley) and Friesland (H. Grindlay) were on terms at the end of five furlongs in 1.2. Lowenberg appears to have recovered from his soreness and worked pleasingly. No announcement has been made as to where he will race at Easter, Wairarana or Feilding, hut wherever it is Lowenberg may be relied upon for a good showing. Friesland has suffered no ill effects from his race at Stratford, and will be racing at Wairarapa over Easter. Nuclei and Autumn Leaf finished together at the close of three furlongs in 37. Nuclei will be ridden at Ellerslie by H. Goldfinch. One Whetu is showing signs of soreness, aud his chances at Feilding do not look as bright and was anticipated. Settlement and King Pluto left, for Feilding this morning to fulfil engagements at the Easter meeting. The remainder of the Hawera horses for the same fixture will leave <t|i Friday.

Flying Chipf ran a useful race at Stratford to gain third place, carrying 41b. overweight, and he will not lack friends in the Ongo Hack Handicap at Feilding on Saturday. Dancing Lady created a big surprise to pay close on double figures o.n Saturday. She had displayed pace on the tracks prior to the Stratford meeting, but the general opinion was that she would require a race before revealing her true forip. Even her connections were caught napping. She was among the leaders throughout and in the straight unwound a paralysing run which carried her to victory in impressive style. Gay Step ran two useful races at Stratford, and may be improving. Like all the stock of the Australian sire, Gay Lothario, she is improving with racing, and. akhough not. engaged at Easter, she is worth remembering for a maiden field when next produced. Corowa has been given a short spell and on resuming work will be put to hurdling. This disappointing gelding has been schooled before and jumps well. He is a useful plodder and should make good as a jumper.

Assistants for Judges. An English journalist who had been spending a holiday in Africa found much to praise. Here is one point he touched on when writing his impressions: Judges in South Africa have an assistant, who stands above ami behind the principal official, who appears to his partner only when in doubt concerning the placing of the third and fourth horses in a close finish. For a judge to have an assistant is a great advantage, for accurate delusions are 'vital, and however skilled a judge may be occasions do arise when he would like to command a second opinion. The practice of having supernumerary also serves the purpose of training men for a premier appointment. Fixtures. March 27 —Greymouth J.O. March 27 —Timpeka County J.O. March 27, 29—Auekuaud R.O.
