NEW MOTOR-SHIP
Port Tauranga Arrives
'The arrival of Captain A. F. Watchlin's new intercolonial motor-ship, Port Tauranga, at Wellington yesterday morning on her maiden voyage from Loudon via Lyttelton, created much interest on the waterfront, and some hundreds of people went over tho ship during the course of the day. Of about 1200 tons gross, the Port Tauranga is painted a striking greenygrey, with buff uppermarks and yellow funnel. With a. length, b.p„ of 235 feet and a breadth -15 feet, the Port Tauranga has her engines right aft, and the greater part of the ship is one huge hatch, 150 feet Long, and the largest in any ship afloat, while her single hatch opening is 96 feet, by 2-1 feet, and in turn is the largest hatch opening in any ship. Looking down from the bridge aft, into the huge open hatch the ship appears to be all hold and able to carry almost unlimited quantities of cargo. Actually her deadweight carrybig capacity is about 1500 tons.
The Port Tauranga brought a full cargo from London, including a number of motor-ears carried as deck cargo. She was built specially for the transTasman timber trade, and when -she enters this service will release the Port Waikato, and that vessel, in conjunction wilh the Port Whaiigarei, will then maintain a. regular service between Auckland, Wellington and South Island ports.
