Mrs. Amelia Earhart Putnam departed for Honolulu on the first stage of her world flight at 4.38 p.m., Pacific time. Half an hour after her take-off Mrs. Putnam sent aradio message: “All’s well.” Although the 7000 feet runway was drenched by the recent rain, Mrs. Putnam accelerated and the ship left the ground after a run of 1897 feet in 25 seconds.
She said good-bye to her husband in the privacy of the hangar and waved and smiled to the crowd which surrounded the plane. Pan-American Airways arranged to share radio facilities with Mrs. Putnam. but she was forced to arrange for a special transmitting schedule. Four hours after her take-off she had covered 700 miles, according to a radio message, and had passed both the clipper ships.
