RENTS AT AUCKLAND
Decided Rising Tendency Dominion Special Service Auckland. March 17. Although the Fair Rents Act is operating iu the direction of restraining advances in house rentals, there is a decided tendency to higher rents, according to land agents and others closely in touch with the situation. They point out that the rising tendency is legitimate, because in many instances rents a few years back were based on depression conditions, landlords then letting houses at rates either completely uneconomic or which gave an inadequate return on investment. These facts are realised by magistrates and others responsible for administering the rent restrictive clauses of the Fair Rents Act, so that, although there are naturally many instances since the passing of legislation last year where rents have been compulsorily reduced, in by far the majority of cases slightly increased rentals have been permitted. The number of rentals thus increased must run into many hundreds in Auckland alone.
