Wellington’s Rubbish

Sir, —I note with pleasure the facilities the city council has made for the disposal of refuse by the load. There is one matter that should be brought before public notice. Wellington streets are littered with rubbish receptacles for the greater part of the time. Yesterday, in Brandon Street, there were dozens of delapidated containers not emptied at 11 o’clock in the morning. I counted 21 outside one office building, and on top were several cardboard containers each full. All of these had been stacked in the street since 5 p.m. the day before, a total of IS hours out of the 24. Last night at 5 o'clock the shops in Willis Street were depositing their tins on the footpath. The pedestrian traffic was thick and progress was impeded by the presence of these unsightly objects. They would remain there all night. Walking along the streets of ‘Wellington in the. evening is to be faced with hundreds of these offensive (to the sight) containers, which are raked through by people and left with the contents spilling over. To make matters worse, many tins have no lids. The whole thing is a reflection on our city. We. as citizens, realise that this state of affairs is partly a result of the difficulties being experienced by the council and most of us accept it with resignation. But what must visitors think of the untidiness of our streets for practically 75 per cent, of the 24 hours? —I am, etc.,

W. H. HINDLE. Wellington, March 17.
