REPERTORY EVENING
One-act Plays and Dancing The members of Hie Wellington Repertory Theatre, who attended in large numbers at St. Francis Hall last night' for the monthly social evening, were more than satisfied by the excellent entertainment that was offered iu tlte well-balanced programme. This included, as is usual on these'oeeasions, three one-act plays produced and acted by members of the society, followed by supper, after which many stayed on to dance. Mrs. George Swan acted as hostess, and was assisted by Mesdames IT. Graves, A. Mack, Biggar, D. J. Davies, J, Baldwin, Misses Nichols and Skerman. members of the social committee. The programme was as follows:--"The Distant Drum." a new melodrama by Philip Johnson. Mr. Ralph Hogg produced the play, the players being Mrs. S. Tansley. Miss Marjorie Murray, Messrs. A. D. Priestley, Wynn Mason and Evan Harrowell. "Miss Marlowe at Play,” a play oi' A. A. Milne's which had not been seen in Wellington before. Those taking part were Mrs. G. A. Dargaville, Miss Catherine Forde, Messrs. L. J. Maule, A. Ashley-Jones. Mr. Ben O'Brien was the producer. "The Dumb and the Blind,” a sketch of London Cockney life by Harold Chapin. This is ranked as a classic among one-act plays, and was produced some three years ago. when it won the Drama League festival for the society. Those present regretted to hear that Mr. F. G. Hayes-Towns was about to leave for England permanently. and the society would consequently lose his valued assistance. "Tlte Dumb and the Blind" was produced iu order to provide an opportunity of saying farwell to Mr. HayesTowns and afforded many members who had not already seen the play a chance of doing so, The cast included Margaret Newell, Miss Coralie Smytlison, and Messrs. F. G. Hayes-Towns aud H. A. .Painter. Mr. G. H. A. Swan produced this play. The programme was completed by Mr. Redmond Phillips, who was listened to .with keen appreciation, in sketches by A. P. Herbert, and Mrs Charles McDonald, Miss Ormi Reid and Miss Olga Burton provided incidental music during the evening. Among those noticed in the audience were: Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Baldwin.
