GOVERNOR OF BURMA
An Extra Special Job
Nir Archibald Cochrane, recently made Governor of Burma, is paid £9(100 and extras. Details of the extras were revealed recently in a Government White Paper dealing witli the salary, allowances and privileges of the Governor, following flic change in the country's Constitution after ils separation from India. Before he lel'l London for Mandalay, Sir Archibald received a cash payment. of £l5OO la pay for Ids fare and the cost of his outfit. His ollicial residences at Rangoon. Mandalay and Maynryo are not only rent, rate and tax free, but are also supplied with free water and electricity. Sir Archibald travels free by rail, road, river and air. A luxury saloon railway coach is always at his disposal; so are river vessels, manned and victualled at the expense of the Stale. Motor-cars and airplanes for his use arc not only maintained by the Stale, but. are shipped to Burma and insured without any charge Io the Governor. And nowhere is a list of Sir Archibald’s yearly allowances:— Sumptuary allowance £9OO Staff and household—(a) Military secretary and his establishment £9825 (b) Maintenance and repairs of ollicial residences £9OO Touring expenses £5025 Expenses for conferring local honours £1125 Among Sir Archibald’s privileges Is the exemption from duty on anything j for Hie personal use of himself or his I family. Food, drink and tobacco for his liou-oliold or guests arc also duly free. Sir Archibald is 52, married, and has two children—a sou and daughter.
