FOR PUBLIC RESERVE

«. i Suggested Purchase of Land Near Paremata MAKARA COUNTY’S VIEW The opinion that efforts should be made by local bodies to acquire as a public reserve a block of 28 acres of 1 land on the Walker Estate, north of the 1 Paremata Bridge, was expressed by Cr. ’ R, W. Bothamley, at a meeting of the [• Makara County Council yesterday. The > suggestion found some support, but the i question was deferred for the time be- • ing. The block could be purchased at a ; reasonable price, said Cr. Bothamley, , and although it was not situated in the , county he thought the council might • well interest itself in the question and become associated with other local bodies in an effort to acquire the area for the public. He understood the • Government was prepared to give a £1 for £1 subsidy, and the Hutt County . Council was prepared to assist. He also felt sure the Wellington City Council would assist. In moving that the council contribute £lOO toward the cost, he expressed the hope that councillors ' would not view the project with any parochial feeling. The area was picturesque, in a good locality and there was an old block house on it, which immediately gave it an historical interest. The chairman, Mr. R. G. Mexted, said he would like to support the move, but he could not because there were reserves in their own area which required nursing. Cr. Bothamley said the reserves in the Makara County were all so small that the people of the district would never use them. Saying he was quite prepared to support the motion, Cr. J. Purchase suggested that they should not commit themselves by stipulating any amount. They should first of all hear what other local bodies were prepared to do. This suggestion was adopted and it was agreed to let the motion lapse, on the understanding that; the question should be raised again later.
