Senor Del Vayo, Minister of State, before going to Valencia, said he was more than ever convinced that Madrid would not be taken. Meanwhile the insurgents are massing north-west of Madrid and it is believed the capital is on the eve of a new onslaught. Government guns are desperately shelling the enemy concentration. The insurgents responded, twice shelling Madrid. A Valencia message says that, lighting their way with hand grenades and dynamite, the Government forces have arrived within 400 yards of the provincial Government building at Oviedo.
A Salamanca message says that Signor Cantalubo, the Italian Ambassador, presented Ins credentials and assured General Franco of the depth of Italy’s love for the new Spain EX-KING ALFONSO AND HIS WIFE Signs of Reconciliation REBEL SUCCESS MAY MEAN RETURN TO SPAIN (Received March 4. 12.30 a.m.) London, March 3. The Rome correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” reports that the audience in a fashionable Rome cinema were astonished to see ex-King Alfonso and Queen Victoria Eugenie, who have been parted aud estranged for many years, sitting together in the stalls. Ex-King Alfonso was looking extremely pleased. They arrived and departed separately, but the meeting is believed to be a prelude to a reconciliation. Well-informed quarters even suggest that when General Franco has taken Madrid the ex-King and Queen may be invited to return to Spain.
