Rifle Shooting Slump

(From “The Dominion,” February 29, 1912.)

Depression, many feet thick, sits upon Trentham rifle range. Last year the opening day of the New Zealand championship meeting witnessed a parade of nearly 600 competitors, high enthusiasm, and the customary ceremonial—au encouraging harangue by the colonel. Yesterday something like 150 competitors put in an appearance—not all at once, but in depressing driblets as if eu route to the obsequies of the honoured dead. 'There was no parade, no harangue. [The hiatus between the volunteer system and the compulsory training system was given as the cause.]

There was a large attendance of business men at (he meeting convened by the president of the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce to consider the question of linking up outside districts with Palmerston by means of motor traction. After some discussion Air. C. A. Loughnan moved that a comprehensive scheme of motor transport connecting country districts with Palmerston be established, and that a company be formed with that object. The motion was carried, and a committee was appointed to carry out the proposal.
