MONTEREY AT AUCKLAND
First Voyage Since Strike
Dominion Special Service.
Auckland, February 26.
After having been idle from November 28 to February 9, during part of the 98 days’ period of the American shipping strike, the Alatson liner Monterey entered Auckland harbour from Los Angeles to-day. She brought 469 passengers, a large number of whom were for Auckland. Some were Australian and New Zealand business men who had been held up in Los Angeles and San Francisco by the strike and others were American tourists, a good proportion of whom will tour New Zealand before going on to Australia. This evening the Alonterey left Auckland for Sydney. The usual call at Alelbourne will not be made, as this would interfere with the resumption of schedule running, which will start when the Alonterey returns to Los Angeles. On her journey to Los Angeles when the strike was in progress the vessel picked up over 500 passengers at Honolulu, who availed themselves of the last chance of returning to America until the trouble was settled. The strike trouble extended to the wharves at Honolulu, but the difficulty was overcome by running passengers out in a big barge, which lowered a gangway to the Alonterey. It was an exciting time for the passengers and proceedings at the transhipment were broadcast.
