Tennis Match

ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

The principal event on the outdoor programme at 'Wellington to-day will be the provincial athletic championship meeting at the Basin Reserve. Some 260 competitors, including the best of the athletes in Nelson, Marlborough, Wairarapa and 'Wellington districts, will strive to secure the laurels. The first race is timed to start at 11 a.m., and at 2 p.m. there will be a parade of athletes, after which the principal contests will be held. The Tennis Programme. An outstanding event on to-day’s lawn tennis programme will be the match between teams representing Taranaki and ■Wellington, which will be played on the Miramar courts. Play will commence at 10.30 a.m.

The following inter-club matches will be played under control of the Wellington Lawm Tennis Association this afternoon :—

Second A division, men: Karori v. Seatoun, Ngahoa v. Technical B, Newtown A a bye, 'Wellington v. Ros.eneath.

Second B division, men: Miramar v. Wadestown, Lyall Bay a bye, Newtown Colts v. Island Bay. Second division, •women: Karori v. Island Bay, Technical v. Varsity, Seatoun a bye. Miramar v. Newtown. Third C division, men: Lyall Bay A v. South 'Wellington, Ngaio v. Khaudallah, Varsity A v. Wellesley B, Island Bay a bye. Third B division, women: Roseneath v. Talavera, South Wellington v. Broadway, Wellington v. Hataitai, Lyall Bay A a bye. Fourth B division: Miramar B v. Rintoul Street, Island Bay v. Miramar A, Roseneath a bye, Te Rama A v. Lyall Bay.

The Hutt Valley Lawn Tennis SubAssociation will continue its inter-club matches in all grades this afternoon, when the following senior games will be played:— Senior A : Hutt Bowling v. Lower Hutt B, at Hutt Bowling; Lower Hutt Av. Upper Hutt, at Upper Hutt; Muritai v. Petone, at Petone. Senior B: Waiwetu v. Petone, at Waiwetu; Muritai v. Taita, at Muritai; Eastern v. Central, at Eastern.

The Wellington Lawn Tennis League will proceed with its inter-club grade matches this afternoon, when the following senior games will be decided Crawford Hill v. Challenge, Berhampore v. Island Bay Presbyterian, United Rec. v. Methodists 8.C., Tui v. Education, Wellington North v. Vogelmorn. Cricket Championships. The Wellington Cricket Association will commence the ninth series of grade championship matches this afternoon, when tlie following senior matches will be started:—Midland v. Hutt, Hutt; Old Boys v. Institute, Kelburn 1; University v. Karori, Karori 6; Wellington v. Kilbirnie, Kilbirnie 1. The Wellington Mercantile Cricket League will proceed with its grade championship competitions this afternoon, when the following A grade games will be decided: —Customs Agents v. Woolworths, Newtown 7; Taxes A v. Roseneath, Kelburn 3; Sargoods v. W.M. Club, Athletic 2; Taubmans v. Prestige, Athletic 1; Jasco v. Amalgamated Bricks, Wakefield 7.

The Hutt Valley Cricket Association will continue its grade competitions this afternoon, when the following A grade matches will be played—Eastbourne v. Gracefield, Eastbourne; Empire v. General Motors, North Park No. 2; Gear United v. Taita, Nai Nai Reserve No. 1; Meadows v. Todd Motors, Randwick School; Bell Park v. Trafalgar Park, Trafalgar Park.

While the 'Wellington women’s senlsr representative team will be playing Auckland, at Auckland, to-day, the following fixtures will be played in Wellington : —- Intermediate: Trinity v. Wesley, Rollestou Street No. 2; Kilbirnie v. Y.W.C.A., Nairn Street. Junior: Aitkens v. Hannahs, Rolleston Street No. 1; Kilbirnie v. Y.W.C.A., Emerson Street No. 1; Technical O.G. v. College 0.G., Tanera Crescent; Lower Hutt v. Technical (day), Waiwetu. Yachting. Wellington yacht clubs will continue their club racing programmes this weekend. Keelers will race for the Bucholz Cup this afternoon at Evans Bay, where there will also be handicap races for launches and all classes of centreboarders. First-class centreboarders will sail for the Kirkealdie Cup at Port Nicholson, and there will be a handicap race for Idle Alongs. To-morrow the limbless soldiers of Wellington will be the guests of the Evans Bav Yacht and Motor Boat Club at tlj annual “limbies’ ” picnic, to be held at Wprser Bay. Bowls. Tile annual games between the Wellington Bowling Club and the Christchurch Bpwling Club for the Barnett Friendly Bowl will be played to-day, the Wellington club beiug the host. Each club visits the other in alternate years. Bowls is played on the visits, but the spirit of the meeting is entirely social, and no record of the results of the games is kept, the visitors always carrying off the trophy and retaining it until they are visited by the other club. Four rinks will arrive in 'Wellington this morning. The players will be entertained at morning tea and lunch at the Wellington club's pavilion, and in the afternoon wjll play against members of the 'Wellington club. The Khandallah club will play the matches for the Tom Lock Friendly Bowl between the members who live in Ngaio and those who live in Khandallah. Other clubs will be occupied chiefly with their ■ club games. Rifle Shooting. The local defence rifle clubs will continue their weekly competitions at Trenthani this afternoon, when the range wifi' be 300 yards. The Golf Card. A fourball best-ball bogey competition will be played on the Shandon links this afternoon.
