TAUPO FISHING

Trout in Large Numbers

WANGANUI MEN’S EXPERIENCE

Dominion Special Service.

Wanganui, February 26. Strong exception has been taken by two Wanganui residents, Messrs. T. Hurley and R. Jenkins, to a statement made recently by Mr. P. Withers, 'Wellington, that fishing in the Taupo area lias been poor this year. “The fish are definitely there,” said Mr. Hurley, who added that the reason why some people are not getting fish could probably be attributed to the fact that they were using the wrong tackle. Personally, he always carried four or five lines with him and used. whichever one was suited to the conditions. All his fishing is done with a fly, as he does not believe in trolling, which should be stopped, “as it is straight-out murder.”

Mr. Hurley has lived in the Taupo area since December last, afid has not missed catching a fish on any one day since. Also for the past four or five years it has been his experience that the fishing is quite good. In one week this month. Messrs. Hurley and Jenkins caught 49 fish, the lightest of which was 441 b. and the heaviest 91-lb., while the majority of them weighed about 611 b. The worst day's fishing in the week was when the conditions were rather rough, and he caught only one that day. Nearly all his casts were made at the delta mouth, but he had caught some splendid specimens at the number one mouth. His catches had always been exhibited to other fishermen who could vouch for them.

“I am going back there shortly, and shall be pleased to prove to anyone that the fish are definitely there,” he concluded.
