GRAIN AND PRODUCE
Canterbury Markets
By Telegraph—Press Association.' Chrisethurcli, February 26.
Apart from the interest that is being taken in wheat, there is considerably less than normal activity in the grain and produce markets, which have been ad. versely affected by the unseasonable weather.
Trading in fowl wheat continues fairly brisk, though sales were being made with caution till yesterday. Since then there has been an absence of sellers, and it is unlikely that trade will return to normal till the plans for fowl wheat are announced by the Government. A statement on the point is expected daily. Little business is being done in potatoes. Northern interests are inquiring desultorily, but are offering low values for deliveries very late in the season. Odd orders are coming in for small seeds, but there is very little demand from the North Island, The position is serious, because a month of the season has now been lost.
There is fair trade in ryegrass, mostly between merchants. The crop in the south appears to be almost a failure, and southern interest is increasing in the Canterbury crop. Quotations have hardened for perennial, which is in the chief request, and also for Italian. The Italian situation is a little different from that of perennial, because there are fair stocks in hand. Perennial is worth 2/6 to 2/9 on trucks, and Italian about the same. Plains cocksfoot is being traded steadily and is selling freely at 7d. to Bd., on trucks. There is enough offering to take care of the demand. Very little Akaroa seed has made its appearance. A few samples of white clover have reached the market and are worth about sd. to 7d„ according to quality. The colour of the average sample this year is a bit darker than it was last year, and there is more rubbish in the seed.
