“MOST BEAUTIFUL IN WORLD”

AMERICAN AUTHOR BUILDS FISHING LODGE

“I have found the most beautiful place in the world? This was how Mr. Fitzhugh Green, a noted American author, spoke of the spot he had selected for a fishing lodge on Tongariro River, near Tokaanu, to a friend in Auckland shortly before he left the Dominion after a visit last year. The day before he sailed he arranged for the construction of a building, and to-day, accompanied by his wife, he arrived by the Monterey eager to see the lodge, that has been built for him while he has been away.

Mr. Green came to New Zealand last year intending to spend ten days here, but he was so charmed with the country and people that he stayed the whole winter. He hoped to come earlier this year, but was held up by the shipping strike. He has booked passages again for next year. The attraction the Dominion holds for Mr. Green is not based on an ignorance of other land_s, for he is exceptionally widely travelled. A commissioned ensign in the United States Navy, in 1911 he served with the Atlantic Fleet, took part in an expedition to the Arctic, served in the war as aide to-Admiral Rogers in European waters, and after occupying a number of other posts, retired in 1927 with the rank of commander. Throughout this period he was writing books of the sea and his accounts of explorations, adventure stories, naval tales and biographies were very widely read. He wrote two volumes on American naval history. He has collaborated with many famous men in the writing of their adventures, including Colonel Charles Lindbergh, Admiral Richard Byrd, and Martin Johnson.
