Guy’s Championship Lead

Although it clouded over in the afternoon, the weather was fine and summery again to-day for the professional golf tourney. . r n The morning's event consistde of the Spalding Medal Handicap, played in conjunction with the first eighteen holes of the Southern Hawke’s Bay professional championship. The Spalding Medal Handicap was won by J. Lambie with 70 net. J. D. Mclntosh was second with 73, C. C. Clements third with 74, and J. P. Dyke fourth with 76. A feature of the afternoon was a remarkable round by the local professional, A. Guy, his figure of 68 being five below par. He secured two eagles and five birdies, and did four holes in two. His card read :—Out: 253463243 —32 ; in : 456542325—36; total 68. Though he took three putts on two greens, he was putting very well. His chip shots were firstclass, and his driving hard and straight, better than in the morning. The following professionals are playing steady golf: J. D. Mclntosh, C. C. Clements, J. Lambie, T. S. Galloway and A. Guy. If. Guy can keep direction he will be in the money. Mclntosh is driving very well, but numerous putts are lipping - the hole. Clements is playing first-class golf, but the greens ar.e considerably slower and less smooth than in the South Island. A. Shaw was unable to get direction with his irons to the green. Scores in the championship are: —

J. Watt — 98 The following are the leaders at the end of the first two rounds:—Guy, 146; Mclntosh, 149; Clements, 151; Lambic, 151; T. S. Galloway, 152; Allbon, 154. The Dannevirke bogey handicap, played in conjunction with the second round of the championship, resulted : —Guy, 5 up, 1; Burridge, 3 up, 2; Allbon, all square, 3; A. Dyke, 1 down, 4. Other scores: T. S. Galloway and Moss, 1 down; J. D. Mclntosh, J. P. Dyke and R. C. Butters, 2 down.
