WAIANA LAUNCHED

New Union Company Motor-ship

The Union Steam Ship Company has received cabled advice that its new motor-ship Waiana, destined to replace the Wingatui in the East Coast cargo trade was successfully launched on February 25 at the yards of Alexander Stephen and Sons, Linthouse. The Waiana is expected to leave England .about the end of March for Auckland, via the Suez Canal and Colombo, under the command of Captain A. H. Howie. An improved Waimarino, the Waiana Is 320 feet in length, with a breadth of 48 feet. Her gross tonnage will be approximately 3400, and her deadweight carrying capacity 3850 tons on a draught of 19ft. Gin. Her service speed will be 12 knots. The Waiana will embody a number of modern features designed to facilitate the handling of cargo. There will be three holds, each with ’tween-decks, and two five-ton derricks will be placed at each end of each hatch, giving six sets of gear, in addition to which a heavy-lift derrick, with a capacity of 20 tons, will be provided. The three hatches will be large, each measuring 45ft. 6in. by 16ft. Modern accommodation amidships will be provided for officers and crew.
