SHEEP IN THICK FOG
Early Morning Experience
A thick blanket of fog spread over Wellington and its outskirts last night, until at midnight it was almost impossible to see farther than the Kelburn slopes. In the Kelburn and Karori areas the fog was particularly thick, transforming the usually bright street lamps into eerie circles of pale light vainly trying to pierce the unnatural atmosphere. Shortly after 1 o’clock this morning a mob of 700 sheep was driven through Karori, down Glenmore Street and Tinakori Road. Homeward-bound motorists at the time had an unusual experience, as the headlamps of their ears flickered in the'eyes of the sheep as the panting animals loonied up ghost-like in the fog. The drovers in charge of the sheep signalled to traffic with electric torches, but, because of the fog, the rays did not penetrate far, although they attracted motorists’ attention and so caused them to take care.
