Few Serious Cases Before Court

Although there was a long list, of bylaw prosecutions before Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, yesterday, serious breaches were the exception. Charged with driving at a dangerous speed, and with failing to stop when requested by a traffic inspector, .Tames Fallen! failed to appear before the magistrate. On the former charge he was fined 30/- and costs, and on the latter 20/- and costs. The evidence for the prosecution was that defendant had been driving a motor-cycle along Oriental Bay at an estimated speed of 40 miles an hour, which was increased to about 55 miles an hour. ■When called on to stop he took no heed of the request. Arising from a collision in Victoria Street, on December 7, 1936. William Joseph Simpson was charged with driving without due care and attention. The case was defended. Saying that the case was not a serious one of its kind, the magistrate convicted defendant and ordered him to pay costs.

Harry Cavell, who pleaded guilty to a charge of exceeding the speed of 30 miles an hour, was fined 20/- and costs. He was, it was stated, driving a motorcycle along Oriental Bay at a speed of 40 miles an hour.

A similar charge was preferred against Gerald Philip, who was also fined 20/- ami costs. ■ It was stated that he travelled across an intersection in Constable Street at a speed of 40 miles an hour.
