INTOXICATED DRIVER

Fined £l5 and Licence Cancelled

Convicted on a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car, Francis Thomas McLoughlin, labourer, aged 46, was fined £l5 in default three imprisonment by Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Lower Hutt, and his licence was cancelled for three months.

Sergeant J. W. McHolm said defendant was arrested in High Street at 12.40 a.m. yesterday. He hail been to a party, and was about to drive bis car when some friends remonstrated with him. A constable standing on the opposite side of the rond heard the conversation, and defendant was warned that he was there. Defendant said he did not care about the police, and got into the car. He did not start it, as the constable arrested him before he had the opportunity. Dr. 11. J. Dudley certified that he was unfit to drive. At defendant's request Dr. F. E. Bolt was summoned, and he also certified that defendant was not fit to drive. Defendant was a second offender for being intoxicated in charge of a ear. but _he had not been before the court since 1932. McLoughlin eaid he had had only two glasses of wine, which was the first drink he had had since 1932. He did not think he would have driven the car, as there were other drivers present.
