UNIVERSITY COLLEGE REQUIREMENTS
Position at Auckland
Dominion Special Service.
Auckland, February 15.
The urgent requirements of Auckland University College, including additional staff, an academic head, the rebuilding of the remainder of the science block and library building, were outlined at a meeting of the college council by Mr. T. U. Wells, following an announcement of his resignation from the position of president of the council.
“There is an immense amount to be done here in the future before the college is functioning as it should,” Mr. Wells said. “I think the greatest need is increased staffing, the staff is very greatly overworked, and I believe we require nine or ten full-time lecturers to do our work as a university college should do.”
A request had been made to the Minister of Education to increase the grant up to £5OOO a year, Mr. Wells said. This would enable them to engage extra staff, and in the science laboratories to obtain assistance that was badly needed. “I think another important requirement is the appointment of an academic head,” he continued. "I know there is some difference of opinion on this matter, but personally I am convinced that an academic head is vefy badly needed here. I,suppose that for a man such as I am envisaging you would have to pay at least £l5OO a year, perhaps more,” he said. “I am inclined to think that such an appointment will be possible in the not far distant future.”
