Farmers Oppose Carriers’ Proposals

Whangarei, February 15.
A schedule of proposed prices for cartage and motor transport within Whangarei County, prepared by the Whangarei Commercial Vehicular Owners’ Association, was discussed in committee to-day by the sub-provincial branch of the Farmers’ Union, the county council, and the chairman ot the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company, who later met the carriers in conference.
A motion was carried that farmers’ organisations opjtosed the fixation of road transport charges at the expense of the farmer as the ultimate payer until such time as the principle of compensated" prices for farm exports was given effect to in a way that provided him with means to pay these costs. It is stated that the new schedule represented an increase of 65 per cent, and was out of all reason.
