HONORARY DENTIST TO HOSPITAL

Discussion by Palmerston

North Board

Palmerston North, February 15,

Mr. J. S. Hornblow, an individual applicant, and Mr. O. H. Williams, secretary of the Palmerston North branch of the New Zealand Dental Association, on behalf of the local members’ branch, whose names were attached to his letter, were applicants for the position of honorary dentist to the Palmerston North Public Hospital. The two applications were discussed to-day by the board, which decided without dissent to appoint Mr. Hornblow, who has acted as dentist to the hospital for some time, and to inform the association that only personal applications were received. It was reported to the board that the executive had considered the applications and was of opinion that the association’s application was not in compliance with what was advertised. Instead of members applying individually the association had made application on their behalf en bloc, and it recommended to the hoard that Mr. Hornblow be reappointed. In reply to a question it was stated that Mr. Hornblow’s name was not among those in the association’s list, that apparently he was not a member, and had;what was termed an advertising practice. Mr. J. Hodgens, M.P., asked what the position would be if in applying for honorary physicians or surgeons, and . so on, the board received a “‘round robin” from the British Medical Association with a long list. It would be stated that this was not what was asked for in the advertisement. In the present case of the post of honorary dentist only one applicant had conformed to the requirements of the advertisement. Mr. W. Howell pointed out that the board, in selecting its honorary medical staff, did not deal through the British Medical Association, but with individual doctors. It was stated in reply to a question that the medical .superintendent was perfectly satisfied with Mr. Hornblow's work.
