CONFERENCE OF N.Z. LIBRARIANS

Opening Session To-morrow

SYMPOSIUM ON IDEALS The ninth biennial conference, of delegates to the New Zealand Library Association will open at Wellington tonight with an informal social gathering at the Hotel St. George. More than 50 delegates will be present from I lie North and South Islands, and Mr. W. J. Gaudiu, chairman of the libraries committee of the Wellington City Council. will preside. The Hoh. I’. Fraser, Minister of Education, will attend as a representative'of the General Assembly Library.

Following tlie opening session tomorrow morning, and an address by the president, discussion on 13 remits will take place. The university librarians’ session will commence at 2 o'clock in tlie afternoon, and at the same time delegates from municipal libraries will be addressed by Mr. E. J. Bell, librarian of tlie. Canterbury Public Library, Christchurch. At 3.30 p.m. a talk will be- given bv Mr. E. B. Ellerni, librarian of the Leys Institute, Auckland, and in the evening, in the Town Hall Concert Chamber, there will be an address by Professor James Shelley, M.A., Director of Broadcasting. One of the most interesting portions of the conference will be the symposium. “Library Ideals —How they are being Realised,” which will commence at 10 a.m. on Thursday, the concluding day of the conference. The speakers and their subjects chosen for the symposium are Mr. T. D. H. Hall, LL.B, (clerk of the House of Representatives), “The National Scheme in General”; Dr. G. H. Scholefield, 0.8. E. (chief librarian of the General Assembly Library), “The Place of the General Assembly Library in the National Scheme”; Mr. John Barr (chief librarian of the Auckland public libraries), “The Rural Library in the National System”; Mr. A. G. W. Dunningham, B.A. (city librarian, Dunedin Public Library), “The City Library in the National System”; aud the Hon. P. Fraser, who will speak on the policy of the Government with regard to library development. A tour in the afternoon of the General Assembly, Turnbull, Newtown, Lyall Bay and Miramar libraries has been arranged. The business meeting will be held in the evening, and this will be followed by an address on the problems confronting country libraries, bv Mr. G. T. -Alley, M.A., librarian of the Association for Country Education, briefly prefaced by Mr. J. Norrie, hon. secretary of tlie association. The Delegates.
