WOMEN SHOPLIFTERS

Christcluircli, February S. “These offences exhibit a systematic course of robbery that the court cannot countenance under any circumstances,” said Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, in sentencing two shoplifters to four months’ imprisonment. Accused were Elizabeth Sutherland, aged 48, and Mary Ann O’Neill, aged 16. Both were domestics and married. O’Neill was also charged with the theft at Dunedin of a fur coat, valued at £l5, the properly of some person unknown. On the application of Detective-Sergeant Holmes, she was remanded until February 15. “The charges demonstrate that these women have been shoplifting systematically,” said Detective-Sergeant Holmes. The two women had been caught stealing in the D.1.C., he continued. They had various goods in their bags and had brown paper with the'm to wrap the things up. There were 16 charges of shoplifting, the value of .the goods amounting to more than £33.
