MERCANTILE LEAGUE CRICKET

Customs Hard Pressed

CLOSE CALL FOR THE A GRADE LEADERS

For the first time this season the A grade leaders, Customs Agents, were hard pressed,' in their efforts to stave off defeat at the hands of Sargoods, in the championship series of the Wellington Mercantile Cricket League. They were dismissed cheaply, but accurate bowling, backed by keen fielding, settled any chance Sargoods had. The bowling was just too powerful for the batting, and Customs left the field with a lead of ten runs. Amalgamated Bricks and Prestige Hosiery scored very comfortable wins against Taubnians and Taxes Department respectively, while Roseneath and Woolworths and Jasco and Working Men’s Club played drawn games, the play in each case favouring the first-men-tioned team.

The weather was fine and the wickets were fast and in the main were in favour of the batsmen. Some high scoring was indulged in. a number of teams passing the 300 mark. Features of the day’s play were the defeats of the two leading B grade teams, Smith and Smiths and Hannahs, and tyvo 200-run partnerships compiled. in the C and E grades. J. Martin, of Shipping, was responsible for an outstanding bowling performance when he took all ten Labour-Tourist wickets for 33 runs, a performance that has been repeated only twice previously in Mercantile League cricket.
