Canterbury Wins Amateur Athletic Contest GOOD TIME BY BOOT By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch. February 7. Canterbury beat Wellington by 12 events to six in the annual amateur athletic contest on Saturday. The tracks were fast and good times wore made, the best being V. P. Boot’s 1.57 for Canterbury in the half-mile. Other good times were: E. P. Newburgh’s 26 4-5 for the 220 hurdles for Canterbury, ami Miss B. Steward's 11 2-5 for the 100 yards, also for Canterbury. MAHR CUP CONTESTS Marlborough, Nelson and Buller By Telegraph—Press Association. Westport, February 7. The Mahr Cup contests, with over 60 competitors from Marlborough, Nelson and Buller, were held in Victoria Square on Saturday afternoon. The weather was fine, with a westerly breeze, which slowed up the times somewhat. In the sprinting events Marlborough won the cup from Nelson (holders) by 7’5 points to 65J, with Buller only 174. Nelson was a little unfortunate in three of its cyclists coming down. The outstanding features of the meeting were the wins of E. Bartlett (Marlborough), in tlie 100 and 220 yards; Manson’s 440 yards race, Hurst’s 880, Saton’s mile, and the performances of Sowerby and S. Johnson, cycling in the mile and three-mile respectively. Miss J. Delly (Marlborough) outclassed the fields in the women’s sprint events. Keds (Marlborough) won the men’s high jump with sft. 4Jin. Miss R. Howard (Nelson) won the women’s high jump. E. Blumhardt (Marlborough) won the shotput with 38ft. 4in., and Moore (Nelson) the hop, step and jump with 40ft. lOin. POLE VAULT RECORD Broken by Opie at Timaru By Telegraph—Press Association, Timaru, February 7. The outstanding performance in the South Canterbury amateur athletic championships on Saturday was that of J. IL Opie, who broke the New Zealand pole vault record by two inches, his leap in a special effort being lift. Gjim Opie won the individual championship for the second year in succession. FAST MILE AT DUNEDIN By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, February 7. Tlie feature of tlie short limit handicap meeting held by the Otago centre of the Amateur Athletic Association on Saturday afternoon, on a dry, fast track, on the Caledonian ground, was a mile run by W. A. C. Pullar in 4.18. This is the fastest mile recorded in New Zealand by an Otago runner. The record for the Dominion is held by Randolph Rose, who established the time of 4.13 4-5 ten years ago.
