Fencing and Cricket Matches A team selected from the crew of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s cadettraining ehip Durham met an eleven representing the combined shipping companies at cricket at Kelburn Park yesterday, the result being a draw. The shipping companies’ team, which was drawn from the New Zealand Shipping Co., Federal Steam Navigation Co., Union Steam Ship Co., and Shaw, Savill and Albion Co., batted first for a total of 90 runs. The main contributors were G. Phillips and Hunter, who scored 25 and 23 respectively. Baldwin and Biss-on shared the wickets, the former taking five for 36 and the latter five for 41. The Durham team in its first knock made 109 runs, Baldwin heading the batting list with a useful 27. Spring bowled splendidly to secure five wiekets for 22 runs in five overs. Iu the second innings the shipping companies’ side’s tally was 96 (Spring 30, and Emmerick 26). Baldwin again proved troublesome, taking six wiekets for 14 runs. Left with 78 runs to make for a win. the Durham side had lost nine wickets for 61 at stumps, Bevan, who was 17 not out, being the only batsman to reach double figures. Fencing Contests Foil and sabre contests between members of the Durham’s crew and the Wellington Swords Club were held last night and were productive of a good standard of fencing. The Swords Club proved superior at foils, winning b.v 10 points to 6, after some keen . contests. The wins were scored as follow: Swords Club, Morris, four wins; Dr. Beebe, three; Messenger, two; Fredric, one. Durham: Huntriss, three wins;. Attfield, two; Sindali, one; Williams, nil. In the sabres contests the position was reversed, the Durham representatives finishing ahead by five points to four.. Following are the results: Durham: Sindali, two wins: Huntriss, two: Underwood, one. Swords Club: Harcourt, three; Wilton, one; Standish, nil. The referees were Miss T. Sindali. G. Harcourt, W. Huntriss, and Dr. Beebe.
