SHOE SENSE
Colour, Shape, Comfort Combined Good shoes keep their shape and will last just twice as long as cheap ones and, in addition, they give lasting comfort and protection against weather conditions, states an exchange. Foot comfort is one of the most important things in life, for it affects the health as well as the temper.' Few things are enjoyable when one’s feet are hurting! Comfort in footwear is so important that even appearance should be sacrificed to it if necessary. Concentrate your energy and money on buying one really good pair of shoes wliich fit you perfectly rather than two or three pairs of inferior quality which may have a smarter appearance—temporarily, at any rate. Discrimination and good taste are important when shoes are being bought, for no matter how bizarre one’s choice of hats, gloves or bags, shoes must never be so noticeable that they overshadow the general effect of an ensemble. Shoes that focus the attention to such an extent that the beauty of . a lovely frock goes unnoticed are .in bad taste and have been chosen wrongly.
Shoes to-day are more elaborate than they have been since early times when they were fashioned from soft leather or velvet, made with long pointed toes and bedecked with pearls and other precious stones. But the modern elaboration is one of cut rather than of ornamentation. Two-toned shoes are an innovation of recent years which have developed from the simple com-
bination of black-and-white or brown-and-white to very varied effects. Blue and white, grey and white, London tan and white, as well as more subtle blending is obtained by using different materials, such as suede and kid of the .same, colour..
Never before have shoes been obtainable in such a variety of colours. To-day you may buy them in all the varying shades of blue from navy blue to powder blue, in green, grey, beige, red, tan and white, as well as the ordinary black or brown.
The fashion of having the ornamentation on'shoes in a different leather is being increasingly exploited and new and different variations are always being invented. To have one s bag matching one’s shoes is another new notion which has caught the fancy of women abroad. The bag is not only made of the same leather, but is decorated with the same motif. The new square toe and square heel is a recent innovation which looks as though it has come to stay, and in some cases where it is used it gives a quaint Chinese look to the shoe. Tongues of a different leather look smart and give the new high-on-the-instep line. Fabric shoes for summer are practical and neat and cool and comfortable on hot days.
