BREACH OF PROBATION

Young Seaman Charged John McPhail, aged 17, seaman, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, yesterday, on charges of deserting from the Rangitane and converting motor-cars to his own use (four counts), for which he had been granted three years’ probation in December. It was explained that he had not reported but had been found by detectives. In the meantime hp had been to sea in the Maui Pomare. He was remanded until this morning and in the meantime is to be put On board a Homeward bound ship if a vacancy should occur. The youth said he was born in Glasgow and had neither parents nor brother nor sister living. The magistrate said he would like to give him a chance to get back to the Old Country. The alternative was committal to the Borstal.
