STEAM TURBINES

New American Battleships (Received February 5. 10.30 p.m.) Washington. February 5. The Navy Department announces that the two new battleships contemplated will be powered by .steam turbines with mechanical reduction gears instead of electric drive. The decision to return to steam was reached after exhaustive studies of speed, tonnage and other factors. The elimination of motors and generators means a space and weight saving of from 20 to 25 per cent., and this will bo utilised to provide more speed, bigger guns, heavier armour, better eompartmentalion and additional facilities for aeroplanes, radio and other equipment. Rear Admiral Cook. Chief of tht Bureau of Aeronautics, stated that in P. 142 (lie Navy would roach full treaty strength, possessing 1910 planes of which 1705 would be available bv the end of 1937.
