When the day is hot, Vanilla, the pig, walks into the pond and just keeps her head out. Her seven babies tried to do the same.— Flax: (6), Paraparaumu. When we went to Turakina the two boys and I climbed up a hill to see the view. When we were going down Royden and lan sat down and slid to the bottom, leaving me far behind. When we returned we declared it was far the best outing we had had.— Tiffaney Tess (9), Palmerston North. One day last holidays we went for a picnic. This time of the year lorries were carrying white pine logs to a timber mill On reaching the bush we heard a loud whistle. Looking in the direction it came from we saw a traction engine, and we went over to it. It had a long piece of thick wire going over a creek into the bush. Presently a man came over to it. He climbed up to a place where there was a wheel. Soon the rope grew taut, and there was a cracking noise in the bush. The man at the other side hooked the wire on to a big Jog. and the traction engine started pulling again. The log was pulled a few feet, then fell with a mighty splash into the creek. Soon we saw the log gradually coming up the steep bank. — Black Eagle (14), Kumeroa. We have a strange visitor who pays us a visit every evening, and that is Henry Hedgehog. Henry has become very tame, and he comes in the evening for a drink of milk. He laps the milk out of the saucer like a cat. He allows us to pick him up in our hands, and he won’t even curl up in a ball. He will also allow the cats to drink out of the saucer while he is still drinking. Sometimes he will bring his mate ■with him for a drink of milk.— Shivery Grass (14), Longbusli. On Wednesday I went to the Botanical Gardens. It was lovely there and I went straight up to the playground and had lunch. After lunch I had some fun on the swings and slides. Then, by four o’clock, I went home in the cable-car. — Bunny Fur (8), Kilbirnie.
