GARDEN FETE

Scots College Effort The final effort of the Scots College Parents’ Association to raise funds for the boys’ swimming baths took the form of a garden fete at the college on Saturday afternoon. Most of the stalls were held indoors in the spacious gymnasium, which was a gay sight with bunting and. streamers. The stalls were particularly attractive, being decorated with huge cellophane flowers. The sweets stall was a work of art in itself. Here scarlet, black and grey, the college colours, were used, huge scarlet flowers decorating the trellised arches, with little scarlet “owls" containing sweets peeping between. The three colours in crepe paper were used to cover the remainder of the stall, and the paper basket? containing the sweets were also of the same shades.

The flower stall dominated one end of the hall and was a glorious sight with its profusion of summer blooms. Brisk trade was done at the fancy work, cake and produce stalls, all of which contained work made or contributed by members of the Parents’ Association. Outside, the Old Boys’ Association provided attractions in the way of side-shows, and rings of men and boys around the skilDtesting stalls bespoke their popularity. The Hon. P. Fraser, Minister of Education, declared the fete open, remarking on the splendid object of the baths for the boys, and wishing it all success.

Afternoon tea was served in the school dining-room, which was beautifully decorated with gladioli. After an inspection of the stalls, the guests and visitors toured the grounds, which are at itheir best just now. The boys’ pipe band provided, the music and lent added gaiety to the scene.
