COLLEGE MATCH
Wellington and Wanganui Draw There were some dramatic changes iu_ (he concluding day’s play of the annual' cricket match between Wellington College aud Wanganui Collegiate School, on the Wellington College ground on Saturday. Wellington, on Friday, ran up 242, and Wanganui, at drawing of stumps, had 84 on for the loss of three wickets. Good bowling by Ongley, who captured five wickets for 36 runs off 19 overs, saw Wanganui collapse for lIS runs when play was resumed on Saturday morning. Nilsson, who played a resolute innings for 51, was the only batsman to shape with confidence, though Green, who reached 24, was just warming to his work when Mildenhall got a good one past him. Mildenliall, a left-hander, also bowled well for Wellington, in capturing four for 34. With a deficit of 124 runs on the first innings, Wanganui followed on, and batted so well that the whole aspect, of the game was changed, and it was Wellington who was on the defensive in the closing stages. Wanganui totalled 266 in their second knock. Barton played, a real captain’s innings for 92, which included eight boundary strokes. He showed sound defence, but came down heavily on everything short or overpitched. Green, as in the first innings, played sound cricket, his 47 being put together' in workmanlike style. Nilsson, Barraud, Slade-Gully, Kahlenberg, Arkwright, and Jacobsen all lent valuable assistance, the last wicket adding 35 runs. Onglev was again the best of the 15 ellington ‘bowlers. He pegged away with great heart for 28 overs, off which he captured four wickets for 78 runs. Yeatnian, who captured three for 37, could have been made more use of. with advantage. as he was making the leather fly with his fast-medium deliveries, which he was sending down from a height well over 6ft. . , . Requiring 143 runs to win, Wellington started their second innings at 3.40, with 110 minutes in which to get them. The innings opened sensationally, as in Jacobsen's opening over, Alexander was brilliantly taken with a right-handed catch in the slips, and one of Wellington’s best batsmen was out with 4 runs on the slate. Cornish and Thompson then set out to repair this early disaster, and succeeded well by carrying the score to 55 Here Thompson, who had shaped confidently for 30, played one to deep, point, and called, but Cornish, as in the. first innings, refused to answer the call, and Thompson was run out for tne second time in the match. Thompson haa been scoring so freely that there was a possible chance of Wellington getting the runs required, but on his departure the Wellington batsmen set out to play out time. This appeared to suit the 55 anganui lads, and the unsual spectacle was seen of both teams playing for a draw. Cornish, who scored 99 in the first m; nin**s, against showed the soundest ot defence in scoring 22. He was well taken on the leg side by Jackman, the 55 anganui wicketkeeper, off Kahlenberg, who was bowling leg-theory. Rough and On "lev both defended stubbornly for a time, "but, when stumps were drawn at 5 30, six wickets were down for 9- rum., and honours were thus left easy. Kahlenberg, Barton, Jacobsen, anl Reynolds all bowled well for s)anganui, and would probably hare won the match had there been another half-hour to 8 0. The 55 T anganui players deserve every credit for the spirited manner in which they retrieved their batting collapse w the first innings. Following are the scores: — WELLINGTON.— First Innings. D R.
