DESTITUTE CHILDREN

Thousands of Needy in Spain APPEAL FOR CLOTHES The privations of children in Spain are described in reports received by the Dominion headquarters of the Red Cross Society. A special appeal on behalf of the children of that country is contained in a cable message received from the headquarters of the League of Red Cross Societies. Paris. Information is also contained in a circular from the International Committee of the Red Cross, Geneva, in which attention is drawn toward school children’s camps scattered over various parts of Spain. The children found themselves started on their holidays in the heart of summer, cut off from their parents, and unable to say how they were because of the course of events.

Reference is also made to thousands of ( destitute children needing clothes and food. Many of them are war orphans. and others have been separated from their families as a result of tragic happenings. The International Committee’s circular indicates the need of clothing, and suggests that immediate efforts should be made as winter is at hand. The clothing sent should include warm knitted garments, coats, layettes', shoes, underwear, caps, blankets. and toilet requisites. This special appeal is directed particularly to the Junior Red Cross throughout the world. The appeal is made particularly for at least 250 complete outfits for children from three to seven years of age. It is hoped that the clothing will be new, otherwise it is essential that it should be mended and disinfected before dispatch. It is hoped children throughout New Zealand will make a special endeavour immediately to prepare some suitable articles for dispatch to Spain. No distinction is made between the two factions in Spain, as the needs of ijoth sides are great.
