POSED AS POLICEMAN
Father-in-laAv Deceived AA r earing a police uniform, spectacles and a heavy moustache, Dennis AVilliani Eagle, a young labourer, of Holme Hale, near Thetford, Norfolk, called on his father-in-law in order to frighten him and get his wife back. So successfully did ho disguise himself that the father-in-law, Edward Russell Cook, was completely deceived. AVheu Eagle appeared before the Swaffham magistrate, Cook described how a man came to his door in police uniform one evening, explaining that he was a Norwich police inspector and saying that he wanted to get to Swaffham, as his vehicle had broken down. Cook declared he lent him his motorcycle. It was an expensive outing from Eagle’s point of view, for he was fined £5 (or a month’s imprisonment) for wearing dress to represent a police officer; £1 (or 14 days) for not having a driving licence; and £2 (or 14 days) for not having an insurance certificate. On a charge of obtaining Cook’s motor-cycle by false pretences Eagle was committed for trial.
