Wellington-Auckland Express Delayed DRIVER’S PROMPT ACTION By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, December 8. Tlie . Wellington-Auckland express was delayed an hour this evening when two sheep wagons attached to a heavy freight train on route from Alarton to Palmerston North jumped the track at tlie foot of Greatford hill. Fortunately the derailment was not attended by serious consequences. Tlie damaged trucks were located live lengths behind the locomotive, Tlie driver’s prompt action in stopping the train so soon probably averted a major smash. The force of tiie impact flung one truck on its side, and before the track could be cleared this vehicle had to lie jacked clear. As a result of the mishap half a dozen sheep died from suffocation. All the available men were pressed into service aud the line was cleared in good time. Later trains, including the Wellington-Auckland Limited, were not delayed.
