NAPIER CATHEDRAL
Dean’s Visit to England to Raise Funds HOPES NOT FULLY REALISED By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, November 18. Hopes that he would be able to raise a substantial sum in England toward the rebuilding of Napier Cathedral, which was destroyed in the earthquake of 1931, were not fully realised by Dean J. B. Brocklehurst, of Napier, who returned to New Zealand in the Rangitata from England. Dean Brocklehurst said that when he left New Zealand he was assured that there were many friends in England and places where assistance could be obtained toward the building of the cathedral. When he got to Great Britain he found that conditions generally were against the idea of much money being obtained. Many business men connected with New Zealand 'were just getting over tlie effects of the depression and so were unable to do much to help. Then, in nearly every diocese, the church itself faced big problems. It was necessary in new housing areas to provide new churches and almost every diocese was endeavouring to raise many thousands of pounds. Because of such problems it was almost impossible to get much assistance for outside appeals. Considering all the circumstances he had had a very kind response, although . the amount raised did not come within expectations. He was unable to disclose the amount until he had submitted his official report. His appeal had met with g great deal of sympathy, and on every hand he heard regrets that it was not possible to do more.
