TEMPERANCE WOMEN

The monthly meeting of the Brooklyn AV omen’s Christian Temperance Union was held recently in the .Methodist hall, and took the form of a gift afternoon. Mrs. Brewer, president, was in the chair, and expressed her pleasure at the attendance of so many members. Mesdames White, Pickering and Ashworth reported that the Victoria wards and ward 6, Wellington Hospital, had been visited, and that scones, jam, sweets, shortbread and books had been distributed to patients Mrs. Pearson, representative to the Women’s auxiliary of .the hospital, extended an invitation for members to be present at the annual meeting, and it was decided to send a donation toward bed jackets, which are given to patients at Christmas. Mrs. Brewer gave an interesting account of a recent meeting of the National Council' of Women, when the peace question was discussed : also of a visit paid to the Willard Home, Palmerston North, where children of from two to 14 years are cared for. Mrs. Webster read a paper on “Gleanings” and as a temperance fact, said: Dr. H. Patterson, F.R.0.5., London, has nover, in 33 years of hospital and private work, prescribed alcohol to any patients.” In order to raise money for headquarters, a “talents” competition was introduced during the year, and quite a substantial sum was raised. Mrs. Stinson made and presented a satin cushion to Mrs. S. White, who won the competition. Gifts were opened and a splendid display of garments was on view. These garments will be sent to the Willard Home and to the Ramabac Mukti Mission, India. The Methodist ladies served afternoon tea.
